Who Licenses Betting in Ghana

The regulator is the Gaming Commission of Ghana. It is a body corporate created by the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721) to regulate, control, monitor and supervise games of chance, with a head office in Accra and regional offices including Kasoa, Kumasi and Tamale.

Section 13 of the Act is the rule that matters to you: no one may operate a game of chance unless it is a limited liability company licensed to run that specific game. Section 18 requires the Commission to keep a register of every licence it grants, and that public register is what this page is checked against.

Reading the Register's Licence Categories

The register prints one row per licence, so an operator holding both a sports betting and an online casino licence appears twice. Sports betting shows up under three different labels, and an operator can hold a sports betting licence without an online casino one.

Match the label to the product you are using: one of the sports betting labels for match bets, and Online Casino for casino games played online.

What an Operator Must Prove to Get Licensed

Section 14 sets the entry conditions. An applicant needs an identifiable office, a logo registered with the Registrar of Companies, the paid-up capital and cash reserves the Commission sets, criminal clearance for every director, a tax clearance certificate, and partial or full Ghanaian ownership. It must also give the Commission access to its bank and financial records.

A licence cannot be transferred to another company (section 19) and must be renewed every year (section 21). The Commission can revoke it for breaching the Act, for failing to keep the required cash reserves, or for six months without operating (section 20).

How to Check a Betting Licence in Ghana Yourself

You do not need to take our word, or a bookmaker's footer, for any of this. The Commission's own FAQ gives the method in one line: check the list of licensed operators on its website.

1. Open the register. Go to the licensed operators page on gamingcommission.gov.gh. Type the address yourself rather than following a link sent in a message or an app.
2. Search for the name. Use Ctrl+F on a computer or "Find in page" on a phone. Trade names are printed in capitals, so search for SPORTYBET, BETWAY or MYBET.AFRICA rather than a logo or slogan.
3. Read the Operation Type column. It tells you what the licence covers. A sports betting label covers match bets; Online Casino covers casino games played online.
4. Check the Expiry Date column. Licences are renewed yearly, so an entry whose expiry date has passed is worth a question to the operator before you deposit.
5. Compare it with the site in front of you. If a site's footer only cites a licence from another country and the register has no entry for it, the site is not licensed in Ghana.

What a GCG Licence Gives You as a Player

A licence is not a guarantee that nothing goes wrong. It does mean the operator has obligations under Ghanaian law and a regulator that can act on them.

The Risks of Betting With Unlicensed Sites

A site without a Ghana licence sits outside everything in the section above. Nothing in the Act makes it hold cash reserves for Ghanaian players, the Commission has no licence to suspend or revoke, and there may be no company in Ghana to pursue.

• Payouts rest on goodwill. If a withdrawal stalls, your options shrink to the site's own support desk and whichever foreign regulator, if any, it answers to.
• Terms written for another market. Bonus rules, currencies and dispute clauses can point to a company and a legal system outside Ghana.
• Moving addresses. Unlicensed sites often switch between mirror domains, which makes it harder to prove which site you signed up with.
• Self-exclusion gaps. A block you arrange through the Commission is built around the operators it licenses, so it may not reach a site outside the register.

We fetch the Commission's licensed operators page, read its table and keep the dated capture as evidence. An operator appears here only when its name matches a register entry under a sports betting or online casino licence exactly; name variants and near misses go to a person to check, never straight onto the page.

Each entry's verified date is the day of that check. When a later check no longer finds an operator, it comes off this page automatically, and we say it no longer appears on the register as of that date, because the register does not give reasons.
